Self-consistent Massive Disks in Triaxial Dark Matter Halos
Galactic disks in triaxial dark matter halos become deformed by the elliptical potential in the plane of the disk in such a way as to counteract the halo ellipticity. We develop a technique to calculate the equilibrium configuration of such a disk in the combined disk-halo potential, which is based on the method of Jog but accounts for the radial variation in both the halo potential and the dis...
متن کاملBias and Conditional Mass Function of Nonspherical Dark Halos
Nonspherical collapse is modelled, under the Zeldovich approximation, by sixdimensional random walks of the initial deformation tensor field. The collapse boundary adopted here is a slightly-modified version of that proposed by Chiueh and Lee (2001). Not only the mass function agrees with the fitting formula of Sheth and Tormen (1999), but the bias function and conditional mass function constru...
متن کاملNumerical self-consistent stellar models of thin disks
We find a numerical self-consistent stellar model by finding the distribution function of a thin disk that satisfies simultaneously the Fokker-Planck and Poisson equations. The solution of the Fokker-Planck equation is found by a direct numerical solver using finite differences and a variation of Stone’s method. The collision term in the Fokker-Planck equation is found using the local approxima...
متن کاملGalaxy Masses: Disks and Their Halos
I review what we currently do and do not know about the masses of disk galaxies and their dark matter halos. The prognosis for disks is good: the asymptotic rotation velocity provides a good indicator of total disk mass. The prognosis for halos is bad: cuspy halos provide a poor description of the data, and the total mass of individual dark matter halos remains ill-constrained.
متن کاملRadiation-Driven Warping. II. Non-Isothermal Disks
Recent work by Pringle and by Maloney, Begelman & Pringle has shown that geometrically thin, optically thick, accretion disks are unstable to warping driven by radiation torque from the central source. This work was confined to isothermal (i.e., surface density Σ ∝ R−3/2) disks. In this paper we generalize the study of radiation-driven warping to include general power-law surface density distri...
